Various electronic and electrical devices, recorded using a Radio Shack telephone pickup while I wandered around the flat with the laptop. Well, that's why I was wandering around - not that I wouldn't anyway. The files are in alphabetical order. When recording, I started in the kitchen and moved to the 'orange room', where the other computers and routers are kept.

: picked up was interference from the laptop.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1019947 Jun 18 03:06 gupi.mp3
: Mechanical toy with a faulty battery and some very powerful motors, which
: probably explains why the battery is faulty, actually.

: Ministry Of Sound portable digital radio. I was able to record good-
: quality audio from the earphones. The radio emitted a lot of noise
: from its EL display. Radio stations featured: BBC Radio Five Live,
: Acen (Welsh), BBC Asian Network, DNN, various other local stations.
: Recorded at 02:26.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1503108 Jun 18 03:08 nokia_7650.mp3
: Nokia 7650 GSM mobile phone / cellphone. The low-frequency noise at the
: start of the sample is caused by the laptop itself.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 694775 Jun 18 03:09 pclink-switch.mp3
: 5-port Ethernet switch (emits a lot of clock noise)

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 4198945 Jun 18 03:09 pickup.mp3
: Telephone pickup test. I am not sure what I was recording here; at a
: guess, I'd say it was probably the laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V1000).

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 568133 Jun 18 03:10 plasma-clock.mp3
: Quartz wall clock with blue plasma dial (plasma emits much crackly noise)

: One of those lightning-like plasma lights

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 723776 Jun 18 03:11 playstation2.mp3
: Sony Playstation 2, of the original 'black and chunky' type. Has a large
: PSU so there's a lot of 50 Hertz hum. The 'sweeping' low-pitched noise is
: the DVD drive.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 2097446 Jun 18 03:11 printer.mp3
: Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 870Cxi. When I recorded this, it was busy doing
: its demo printout - you can hear the print head shuttling around. The
: middle-pitched notes are from the stepper motor that powers the platen.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 10235947 Jun 18 03:11 psp.mp3
: Sony PSP1000 ('Playstation Portable'), originating from Japan. Much
: electronic noise here, and I was startled that the UMD drive causes a
: very powerful magnetic pulse (you can hear this after I started playing
: "Everybody's Changing". These brief clips of music are from Keane's
: 'Hopes & Fears' album, copied to the Memory Stick PRO Duo as mp3s.
: The UMD game featured is 'Lumines'.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 2715607 Jun 18 03:12 roberts-radio.mp3

: transformer here, and audio from local radio stations.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1737165 Jun 18 03:12 sleep-machine.mp3
: Radio Shack 'Sleep Machine'. This is a digital clock which outputs several
: sound clips: ocean, wind, train, 'night'. The unit has a fault where it
: resets when the sound stops playing (possibly needs a capacitor).

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 2789168 Jun 18 03:12 smc-2835w-wifi.mp3
: PCMCIA/Cardbus wireless adaptor

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1057145 Jun 18 03:13 smc7804wbra-router

: Buzzes a lot. Crashes as well, although I didn't record that.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 820162 Jun 18 03:13 sparcserver.mp3
: This ancient computer (1990) has many noisy fans and an efficient PSU.
: I picked up lots of clock noise from the system card. At the end of the
: sample, I switch the computer off.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 2061919 Jun 18 03:13 spc_c500.mp3
: SPV C500 cellphone/mobile: large backlit display, Bluetooth. In this
: demonstration I call my home phone (the DTMF tones can be heard).

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1918723 Jun 18 03:14 tandy102.mp3
: Radio Shack Model 100 / Tandy 102 portable computer. This computer is 20
: years old and emits almost no RF noise. The only noises you can hear are
: from the laptop. The clicking sounds and high-pitched tone are from the
: built-in 300 baud modem.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 340763 Jun 18 03:14 toaster.mp3
: This being an appliance with a heating element, much 50Hz hum is picked up.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 507529 Jun 18 03:14 torch.mp3
: Shake... shake... shake.. click, click (18s). This torch requires no
: batteries and is powered by shaking it: a magnet moves up and down between
: two coils (or is it a coil moving between magnets?), causing a capacitor to
: be charged. The capacitor slowly discharges when the light is switched on
: (white LED).

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1287441 Jun 18 03:14 travel_clock.mp3
: A cheap portable travel clock with a quartz-controlled solenoid mechanism
: and a 'bip-bip-bip-bip' alarm.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 600316 Jun 18 03:15 winter-benq-monitor.mp3

: the drive clock of the ... of the.. you know what I'm trying to say, don't
: you? ... cos' I'm buggered if I do.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 3519922 Jun 18 03:15 winter-mobo.mp3
: AMD Athlon XP/1700 PC. Lots of noise coming from the NVIDIA graphics
: card (the fan speed can be heard varying at around 20s). The bursts of
: periodic noise are emitted from the system bus - the computer is processing
: Marsenne Prime numbers. At 1m55s, the medium-pitched sine tone is from the
: EL display of the 'Cooler Master' hard drive fan controller. This repeats
: at 02:50, when I change the speed of the HD fan.

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 1385661 Jun 18 03:15 winter.mp3
: AMD Athlon XP/1700
: The outside of the case: PSU fan, Cooler Master fan controller. The
: 'beep-beep' is the alarm reminding me that the CPU fan is not connected to
: it (it's plugged into the motherboard so I can monitor the speed with the
: system software).

-rw-r--r-- 1 lex users 2152616 Jun 18 03:15 wrt54g.mp3
: Linksys WRT54G wireless Ethernet router
